Building custom homes in Wimberley
Iron C Construction is a custom home builder in Wimberley, TX, and this is where we live and work. Robert Castro founded the company here in 2020, and our team builds new homes, additions, and remodels across the Texas Hill Country, from the Wimberley square out to the ranch roads along Cypress Creek and the Blanco River. When you build with us, the people who walk your lot are the same people who price the home, run the job, and hand you the keys.
Most of our Wimberley clients come to us with land, a list of must-haves, and a lot of questions about what the Hill Country will throw at them. Our job is to answer those questions honestly before anything is signed, then build a home that fits the ground it sits on and the way you plan to live in it.
What shapes a Hill Country build
A custom home here is rarely a flat-lot project. Before we design anything, we look at the four things that drive cost and schedule on almost every Hays County site.
- Rock and slope. Shallow limestone makes a strong base for a foundation, but cutting rock costs more than digging soil, and a sloped lot changes the slab, the driveway, and the drainage. We price it from the site, not from a template. Our guide to what building on solid limestone adds to a budget walks through the numbers.
- Septic and a private well. Outside town, most homes run on a well and an on-site septic system. Where rock sits close to the surface, Texas rules often call for an aerobic or other advanced system instead of a simple drainfield, and the Hays Trinity Groundwater Conservation District handles well registration in this part of the county. Both steps start early, because the well and septic timeline usually sets the pace for the slab.
- Creeks and floodplain. Lots near Cypress Creek and the Blanco River can sit in a mapped floodplain, which affects where the house goes and how high it sits. We check the flood maps before design, not after.
- Heat, sun, and wildfire. Orientation, roof overhangs, and materials that hold up to Hill Country sun matter here, and so do ember-resistant vents and a Class A roof on wooded acreage.
None of these are reasons not to build. They are reasons to plan with a builder who has already walked a lot of ranch land and rocky hillsides in this county.
What a custom home costs to build
The question we hear first is cost, and the honest answer starts with a benchmark. The median contractor-built custom home in the United States cost about $166 per square foot to build in 2024, not counting land, according to the National Association of Home Builders. That figure is a starting point, not a quote.
On a Hill Country lot, the site work sits on top of that number: rock excavation, a longer driveway, an advanced septic system, a well, and power run in from the road. Finishes move the price as well, and they move it more than most people expect. A simple ranch-style plan with standard finishes and an easy site lands very differently from a two-story dream home on a limestone ridge with a long list of upgrades.
That is why we price from your actual land and your actual plan. You get a line-by-line budget that shows where the money goes, including the site costs a low number usually leaves out, so the figure you plan around is the figure you build to.

Building on your own land
Many of our clients already own property and want the right new home on it. We start by walking the site with you to look at the slope, the rock, the trees worth keeping, the view you want from the kitchen, and how a driveway can reach the house without a fight. From there we confirm the septic area and well location so the layout works around them instead of the other way around.
Next comes design and the paperwork. Inside the city limits of Wimberley or Woodcreek, the city reviews the building permit. Out in unincorporated Hays County, the county handles septic and floodplain development permits. We line up those reviews, the survey, and the construction staking so the build moves from design to slab without long stalls.
How we run a custom build
Every project moves through the same clear process: site review and budget, design and selections, permitting, construction, and a final walkthrough. You always know which stage you are in, what decisions are coming, and who to call.
Robert Castro stays involved in the projects we take on, and Arthur Leyva, our Construction Coordinator, brings more than 20 years of field experience to keeping the daily work organized and on schedule. When something unexpected turns up, like rock where the plans expected soil, we show you what we found, explain the options and the cost, and let you decide before work moves forward.
Why a local builder matters
A home is a long-term relationship with the company that built it. A builder based in the same town is close enough to show up, accountable to the same neighbors you are, and still around when you need a question answered years after move-in. That is the standard we hold ourselves to: quality craftsmanship you can see, honest pricing and timelines, and one accountable team from start to finish. We build across Wimberley, Woodcreek, Driftwood, and Dripping Springs, so the lessons from one Texas Hill Country site carry straight into the next.
If your plans lean toward a shop, office, or storefront, our construction company in Wimberley covers the commercial side of our work as well.
